Radio Gdansk News in English: Polish president wishes US first couple speedy recovery from COVID-19

Polish President Andrzej Duda on Friday sent his best wishes to the US presidential couple, who have announced they have tested positive for COVID-19.

„Our good wishes for speedy recovery to our friends US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump,” Duda said in a tweet. „Poland and the United States will get through the hardships and succeed in fighting COVID-19,” the Polish president added.

Donald Trump tweeted earlier that he and his wife Melania have tested positive for COVID-19. The news comes as Poland reported a record daily rise in coronavirus infections for a second straight day on Friday, confirming 2,292 new cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country in early March.

EU leaders at a special summit in Brussels on Thursday approved a Polish economic aid plan for Belarus that aims to support democratic changes in that country.

„I am pleased to say that the European Council, after a very long debate yesterday, approved the economic plan for a democratic Belarus that we championed,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said. He added: „The plan is to support democratic changes, any changes that serve a free, sovereign Belarus.”

The plan aims to implement concrete projects and programmes, including support for small and medium-sized enterprises, a visa-free regime and a stabilisation fund.

Robert Lewandowski has been named UEFA Player of the Year, a major European football honour, adding to a long list of accolades for the Polish star striker.

Lewandowski, who captains Poland’s national football team, plays for German side Bayern Munich. He ended the previous season as the top scorer of the German premier league, on 34 goals as well as scoring six times for Bayern in the German Cup. He also bagged 15 goals in last season’s Champions League, where his team beat French side Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the final.

After a three-month break, the „SOS – Pomoc” bus is out on the streets of Gdańsk again helping the homeless The service helps up to 60 people a day enjoy free meals.

Due to the pandemic, the rules on the bus have changed a bit, for example there is currently no medical help on offer and clothes will not be given out, but clients will get soup which will have to be eaten outside as well as information about what help the city provides the homeless of the city.

The bus operates daily and can be found 8.15 in the evening at the bus depot at Przymorze SKM, 9.15 pm on the parking between green market and police station in Wrzeszcz and at 10.15 pm at the bus stop next to the Krewetka cinema at Gdańsk Główny.
