Radio Gdansk News in English: Polish PM criticises EU court’s decision on Turów mine

The Friday decision by Europe’s top court that Poland should halt the extraction of lignite at the Turów mine goes against the fundamental principles of the European Union, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said. In a statement published on Friday, Poland’s PM said that any decisions taken by the court must not threaten the energy security of individual Member States. The Polish Prime Minister noted that the Turow power plant, supplied with lignite coal from the nearby mine, provides between 4-7 percent of Poland’s power.

The decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union on Friday came after a motion by the Czech Republic. It states that further extraction at the coal mine in Turów, south-western Poland, must be immediately suspended pending a final ruling.

The Gdańsk football stadium formerly known as the „PGE Arena” has a new sponser since yesterday. The stadium is now to be called the „Polsat Plus Arena Gdańsk” after the satellite TV company, the fifth largest digital platform in Europe, stepped in to sponsor the arena to the tune of PLN 17 million. The president of the stadium said „This is a satisfactory amount, but I must admit that it is not the most important thing for us. We are glad that we have acquired a large, stable partner with whom we will cooperate for six years, because we have signed a contract for such a period. A partner who will not only support us financially, but also organize various events at the stadium”. The stadium in the Letnica district of Gdańsk has been without a main sponsor since November 2020.
