The Polish President Andrzej Duda has issued a state of emergency on Poland’s eastern border with Belarus as the migrant stand-off with Belarus continues.
The Polish president has stated that the state of emergency was needed as the situation is dangerous and that Poland has a responsibility to secure its borders and the borders of the European Union. The state of emergency is expected to give authorities broader powers to monitor and control the movement of people. Last week, Poland began the task of building a barbed wire fence along the border which is almost 400 km long. The Belarusian president is accused of trying to destabilise Poland and the EU by sending refugees and migrants from countries like Afghanistan and Iraq over the border, sometimes at gunpoint.

An Afghan boy who arrived in Poland in August as part of the refugee program has died after eating poisonous mushrooms – his brother is also seriously ill after eating the deadly nightcap mushrooms.
Doctors treating the second boy have indicated that he is unlikely to survive. The boys, aged 5 and 6, had arrived from Afghanistan last month and were staying at a refugee centre in a suburb of Warsaw. The surviving boy has had a liver transplant, but appears to have extensive nervous system damage which makes recovery unlikely.

A trove of coins from the 9th century has been found in the North East of Poland in an extraordinary archaeological discovery.
The 13 silver dinars coins come from the time of the Carolingian Empire which ruled from the year 800 to 888 across Northern Europe. The discovery comes on the heels of an earlier find of 118 similar coins on the same site. The first traces of the treasure were found in a field near the village of Biskupiec Pomorski by amateur metal detectorists last November. The coins were the largest such find in Poland.

One of the largest shipbuilding companies at Gdańsk shipyard has won a prestigious award this week.
The „Remontowa” company has been awarded the prestigious Shippax award for its battery-powered hybrid passenger ferry Festøya.
The ferry operates for a Norwegian ferry company and is one of the most energy efficient ships in its class. The ship can be fully battery powered and is also equipped with biodiesel generators for when extra power is needed. The whole design incorporates energy efficiency at every step and the batteries are charged automatically when the ferry is berthed in the harbour between crossings.
