Poland reports nearly 600 illegal attempts to cross its border from Belarus in one day | Chopin Competition reaches final stage | Brown bear population growing in Poland | Radio Gdańsk collects money for bicycle for local disabled boy

Poland’s Border Guard service yesterday reported 592 illegal entry attempts made from Belarus the previous day. The figures highlight the concerted and orchestrated attempts being made to cross the border.
All but one attempt was thwarted and in that case an Iraqi national was detained. In addition, 10 foreign nationals from Turkey, Germany, Romania, Georgia, Bulgaria, Tunisia and Moldova were arrested for aiding and abetting the migrants. The Polish Border Guard posted a video on Twitter showing a group of 70 migrants who gathered on the Belarusian side and tried to force their way through the border fence.

The jury of the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw has announced the names of the twelve finalists, including two from Poland. Pianists from ten countries will compete for the top accolades including contestants from Canada, Japan, Poland, China, Italy, Spain, Russia and South Korea.

In the final stage, starting on Monday, they will perform one of Chopin Piano Concertos. The prizewinners will be announced on October 20. The top winner will receive the Gold Medal and EUR 40,000 in prize money. The competition was originally due to be held in 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID pandemic. All performances are live-streamed on YouTube and broadcast on Polish channels TVP1 and Polskie Radio.

The brown bear population in Poland’s Podkarpacie region in the South Eastern corner of the country is in a very healthy state with the number of bears increasing by sixfold in the last 40 years, according to the Dobrewiadomosci website.

A spokesman for Poland’s forestry service said that at the beginning of the 1970s there were only 20 bears and now there are around 130 bears living the mountainous areas of south-eastern Poland. The region is also home to around 500 wolves, 260 lynxes, 160 wildcats and over 270 bison. There are estimated to be around 8,000 brown bears in the whole Carpathian region which extends over the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia.

And finally, Radio Gdańsk is helping a young boy from Gdańsk with Down Syndrome. Yesterday, as part of the „Pomorze Biega i Pomaga” campaign which translates as „Pomorze runs and helps”, the Radio Gdańsk team raised several thousand zloty at that Galeria Przymorze to help buy a specially adapted bicycle for Paweł.

Paweł’s adoptive mum says that Paweł has thrived in his adoptive family and the bike would make a huge difference to his life, allowing him to spend more time with his brothers and also allowing him to take part in much needed physical activity which helps him to develop strong bones and muscles.So far, almost PLN 9500 has been raised of the needed PLN 15000.
