Radio Gdansk News in English: Polish refiner sees revenue spike as oil prices rise

Poland’s state oil refiner PKN Orlen has reported a very healthy 52 percent increase in revenue year on year, thanks in part to rises in oil prices in the last year.

The company had earnings over around PLN 4.3 billion in the third quarter of 2021, compared to PLN 2.3 billion in the same quarter last year with a corresponding increase in sales of 2 percent. Oil-processing, petrochemicals and energy accounted for 75 percent of the earnings.

Poland’s interior minister has unveiled a EUR 2.2 billion plan to modernise and streamline the country’s law enforcement services, including the police force and the Border Guard, calling it „a great investment in the security of the Polish people.”

 

Under the proposed legislation, some PLN 10 billion would be channelled over the next four years to upgrade and develop Poland’s uniformed services, including the State Fire Service and the State Protection Service which provides protection for the Polish government.

An exhibition made entirely of Lego and showing some of the key moments in Polish history has gone on display in the south western city of Poznań.

The exhibition is made from 1.5 million Lego blocks and depicts such events and places as the defence of Westerplatte at the outbreak of the 2nd World War and the Gdańsk shipyard strikes and other key moments in Polish history. The project has taken 7 years to realise and is the work of 3 amateur Lego fans who have worked alongside historians to ensure the accuracy of the installation. The exhibition is on display at Poznan’s historic trade fair and runs until June 2022.

A man has been murdered near the centre of Gdańsk in what police suspect was an attempted robbery.
A 45 year old man was strangled and robbed and died as a result of his injuries and a 32 year old man has been taken into custody.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening near a hotel on Rajska street not far from the Old Town when police received reports of the body of a man whose belongings had been stolen. They quickly moved to secure the scene for forensic analysis. The suspect was arrested the following morning and the investigation is ongoing.
