Polish politicians from across the spectrum met in Warsaw yesterday to discuss the country’s security amid the war in neighbouring Ukraine.

President Andrzej Duda told reporters he was pleased to be able to discuss Poland’s security with top politicians from across the divide. He thanked Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Cabinet ministers and senior lawmakers for attending the meeting. The president said that Poland’s National Security Council was meeting after NATO leaders last week made a number of important decisions at last week’s summit in Madrid, Spain. The National Security Council advises the president and includes senior officials such as the Speakers of both houses of parliament, the prime minister, the defence, interior and foreign ministers, and prominent politicians from both the government and opposition.

Summer has only just begun but experts in Poland are warning that a vast part of the country could be affected by what officials describe as hydrological drought, and weather forecasts show there is much cause for concern.

Drought could pose a threat to some 1,689 municipalities in Poland, or 68 percent of the total number, while 26 percent of the farmland is already suffering from drought according to a professor from the agricultural meteorology department at Poland’s Institute of Plant Cultivation and Soil Science. In the eastern Lubelskie province, farmers are already speaking of a looming threat to crops that need regular watering.

Satellite observations have revealed the burial site of a 10th century kind of Norway and Denmark.

The 3-metre-high, 33-metre-wide royal kurgan of Harald 'Bluetooth’ Gormsson who was born in 958 AD was spotted from space in the village of Wiejkowo in North West Poland, according to the website tvp.info. The burial place of 'Bluetooth,’ who inspired Bluetooth technology, had been one of history’s longest standing mysteries. Until now it was only known that Harald Gormsson died in 986 in his Viking fortress of Jomsborg, in what today is the Polish city of Wolin, located just five kilometres from Wiejkowo.

And finally, ongoing renovation works at the Gdańsk central railway station are set to be delayed in part by the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine which have affected the availability of some construction materials.

The works were supposed to be finished by the end of this year, but are now estimated to be completed during the first quarter of 2023, with the station being open to the general public towards the end of this year. The works have a budget of PLN 100 million and include the restoration of a number of historically significant artefacts.
