US Vice-President’s husband to visit Poland

The US Vice-President’s husband is set to visit Poland later this month. The husband of Vice-President Kamala Harris’s visit aims to advance efforts to combat anti-Semitism and to attend Holocaust remembrance events, the White House has said. He will be in Kraków from January 26 to 29, the White House said. He will also visit the Memorial and Museum at Auschwitz-Birkenau. He will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony and attend the annual commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Fitch affirms Poland’s 'A-’ rating, stable outlook

International rating’s Agency Fitch has given a healthy score to the Polish economy in the latest of its annual ratings of the country. The firm affirmed Poland’s „A-” credit rating with a stable outlook. Fitch, one of the world’s „Big Three” credit rating agencies, cited Poland’s „diversified economy,” coupled with „a fairly sound macroeconomic framework anchored by EU membership, and slightly lower public debt levels than rated peers”. The agency said it expected that „the Polish economy will remain resilient to external shocks and macro-economic challenges, due in part to a commitment to and record of solid fiscal performance and an improved external balance sheet”.

Poland’s Lewandowski nominated for FIFA best player award

Polish super striker, Robert Lewandowski has been nominated by FIFA as one of its men’s players of the year for 2022. The football world governing body has nominated 14 players for the award, including Lewandowski, who plays for Spanish giants Barcelona. Lewandowski has been nominated for the annual award for the third time in a row alongside the likes of Argentina’s Lionel Messi and France’s Kylian Mbappé. The 34-year-old, who captains Poland’s national team, has already won the accolade twice. He was named FIFA’s world player of the year for 2020 and 2021. This year, Messi, who won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, is widely seen as the front-runner to pick up the coveted prize, which aims to select the best player in the world. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on February 27.

Drawbridge to Sobieszewo island near Gdańsk is broken

The drawbridge crossing from Gdańsk to the island of Sobieszewo has suffered a technical fault and is not able to be raised for allowing large river vessels to pass through between the Port of Gdańsk and the open sea, it has been reported. Car traffic across the bridge is unaffected. The crossing has been operating since autumn 2018 and the defective component of the raising mechanism will be replaced under warranty. The repairs are expected to be completed within a few days.
