White House Voices Support for Expedited Swedish NATO Membership

Following the Turkish Parliament’s recent ratification of Sweden’s NATO accession, the White House has advocated for a quick integration for the country. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated: “This has been an important priority for POTUS. Sweden is a strong, capable defense partner whose membership in NATO will make the US and the Alliance safer and stronger.”

Sullivan’s statement was made after a meeting with his Swedish counterpart Hendrik Landerholm, in which besides NATO integration they also discussed support for Ukraine, the growing situation with the Yemeni rebels in the Red Sea, and humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip.

With the ratification from Turkey, Hungary is the last NATO member to approve Sweden’s membership. US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby referenced a statement made earlier by the Hungarian government not to interfere with the process, not wanting to speak on their behalf.

President Pardons Jailed Former Ministers

President Duda has announced pardons on behalf of former government ministers Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik, who were sentenced to serve jail time earlier this month for abuse of power during their terms in the Polish anti-corruption agency.

The president stated that despite issuing the pardons, he still believes that his original pardons from 2015 were still valid, and that the veto of the pardons by the Supreme Court last year was invalid according to a Constitutional Tribunal ruling. He concluded by calling for their immediate release.

Major Theft at Warsaw University Library

In what is being called the largest library heist in post-WWII history, eighty-seven rare and valuable books were stolen from the Warsaw University Library (BUW) totaling over EUR 500,000. Former director of the library Anna Wołodko was dismissed from her position following the theft and succeeded by Jolanta Tabielska.

The investigation into the theft, ongoing since last November, has become a part of a wider probe into an international criminal gang believed responsible for the theft as well as several others in former Eastern Bloc countries. The texts, mainly in Cyrillic script and originating from the 19th century in current day Russia, were believed to be targeted for auction houses and antique book stores in the Russian market due to their rarity.
