Prime Minister Boris Johnson suffered another defeat yesterday as the country’s Supreme Court ruled that his decision to prorogue, or suspend, parliament earlier this month was unlawful.

The eleven judges said unanimously yesterday that the suspension was unlawful because it had the effect of preventing parliament from carrying out it’s constitutional functions. They added that there was no apparent reason, let alone good reason, for a five week suspension. The ruling means that technically, the prorogation that has closed parliament this month, never happened and lawmakers are free to return to business. Accordingly, the British Parliament will reconvene today with just 37 days left before Brexit.

MEANWHILE, THE POLISH GOVERNMENT HAS OFFICIALLY APPROVED A BALANCED BUDGET FOR 2020 POLSKIE RADIO REPORTS

The budget is the first since the fall of communism to balance government income and spending, avoiding a deficit. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told reporters that this year’s budget is „development oriented”, with predicted growth of 3.7 pct. Poland’s new Finance Minister, Jerzy Kwieciński, added that the growth estimate was a „conservative figure” and that growth could potentially exceed pct.
