Radio Gdansk English News: In the latest coronavirus updates

A A

In the latest coronavirus updates, markets have continued to plummet as the US and UK stock exchanges yesterday suffered their worst performance since Black Monday in 2008. In Poland the first fatality from Corona virus has been recorded and across Europe the number of infections continues to grow and spread unabated. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife, Sophie, was among several thousand people newly diagnosed with the COVID-19 respiratory disease that has now infected almost 135,000 and killed more than 4,900 worldwide. Experts warn that due to a lack of testing and unreported cases, many more people may be affected by the outbreak that emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year. Major sporting events have been cancelled or postponed, large public gatherings restricted or banned and schools closed. The USA has also banned all Schengen country citizens from visiting the USA – the US administration say that the EU failed to take sufficient steps to control borders and the spread of the virus. UK citizens are not included in the ban and can continue to travel to the USA.

We have included some useful websites on our news page where you can access reliable and up-to-date information on the Corona Virus outbreak in Poland.

The Polish women’s national football squad has routed Azerbaijan 5-0 in its third European championship qualifier this week. The match in Baku on Wednesday saw the Poles create and convert a wealth of scoring opportunities. The Polish women’s team kicked off its Euro 2021 qualifying campaign in November with a goalless draw with Spain. The Poles last week notched up a comfortable 5-0 home win over underdogs Moldova in their second European championship qualifier. After three rounds of fixtures, Poland are on top of their qualifying group, ahead of Spain. The women’s Euro 2021 football championships will be held in England from July 7 to August 1 next year, with the final due to take place at London’s Wembley Stadium. The Polish team is ranked 30th in the world.

And finally, the Port of Gdynia has revealed expansion plans which would allow the port to accommodate the construction and operation of offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea. The Port of Gdynia Authority has expressed its interest to apply its pre-emptive right and purchase the War Shipyard. The Port Authority has already carried out a preliminary investigation of the possibility to adapt owned land for handling, storage, and assembly of offshore wind farm components. Last year the Port signed a Letter of Intent with local community representatives to jointly invest in and operate onshore facilities for offshore wind farm construction off the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Poland plans to develop 8GW of offshore wind energy in the Baltic Sea by 2035 and forecasts show that the Baltic Sea around Poland has the capacity to generate 9GW to 12GW of energy, ranking it second only to the North Sea. In total, 13 wind farm projects are under consideration in Poland’s Baltic Sea with an ambition to generate 25% of the country’s energy by offshore wind by 2040.
