A Russian naval vessel fired warning shots yesterday at a cargo ship in the southwestern Black Sea and later inspected the vessel. The incident marks the first known use of warning shots by Russia against a commercial ship operating outside of Ukraine since Moscow’s withdrawal from a landmark UN-brokered grain deal.

The agreement allowed for the transport of Ukrainian agricultural products through the Black Sea. Russia’s recent departure from the deal was accompanied by a stern declaration that it views any vessels bound for Ukrainian waters as potential carriers of weaponry.

According to a statement released by the Russian defense ministry, the Russian patrol ship Vasily Bykov issued warning shots using automatic weaponry toward the Palau-flagged commercial vessel Sukru Okan. As reported in Reuters, Russia maintains that the captain of the cargo ship failed to respond to requests for a halt to facilitate inspection.

After firing warning shots, the Russian military accessed the Sukru Okan using a helicopter and subsequently conducted an inspection, after which the vessel was allowed to continue its journey. Russia has claimed the cargo ship was headed to the Ukrainian port of Izmail, but Refinitiv shipping data cited by Reuters shows the ship heading toward the Romanian port of Sulina.

Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, later described the incident as a „clear violation of international law of the sea, an act of piracy and a crime against civilian vessels of a third country in the waters of other states.”

August 15 marks the 103rd anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw (Bitwa Warszawa), which halted the advance of the Soviet Red Army, safeguarding Polish independence and limiting the spread of Soviet Communism into Europe.

In honor of the anniversary and Polish Armed Forces Day, a series of picnics and other events were held across Pomerania over the weekend, featuring sapper competitions, displays of military equipment, meetings with soldiers, and the traditional pea soup.

According to Krzysztof Drażba from the Institute of National Remembrance in Gdańsk, recent events across the eastern border show the need for a strong national army, and it is „an important element of national identity that is worth cherishing.”

Earlier today in Gdańsk, city officials attended a solemn mass in Wrzeszcz before paying tribute to the legacy of Marshal Józef Piłsudski at the Piłsudski Monument in Strzyża.

Celebrations in Gdańsk typically occur the day before the August 15th holiday so as not to conflict with official celebrations in Warsaw, most notably the national military parade scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow in the capital.

Neighborhood celebrations are also planned across Trójmiasto tomorrow to commemorate Polish Armed Forces Day, and the Museum of the Second World War will also be open and free of charge to visitors.

As part of Armed Forces Day celebrations, a new building and exhibition of the Polish Army Museum opened yesterday in the historic Citadel of Warsaw.

Culture minister Piotr Gliński, defense minister Mariusz Błaszczak, and other prominent government officials were among the attendees at the official opening ceremony held on Sunday. In a speech marking the event, Gliński celebrated the creation of „one of the largest museum complexes in Europe” and „the opening of the Citadel to the public after two hundred years.”

The Warsaw Citadel is a 19th-century fortress in the Polish capital built by the order of Russian Tsar Nicholas I after the suppression of the 1830 November Uprising.

The Polish Army Museum will be part of the Museum of Polish History, a complex of museums located at the site of the historic Warsaw Citadel. The complex will also host a Museum of Independence and the Katyń Museum, which commemorates the 1940 massacre of Polish officers by the Soviets.

On Sunday, Lechia Gdańsk defeated Znicz Pruszków 1:0 thanks to a solid debut by Swedish defender Elias Oscar Olsson. The 20-year-old center-back scored the only goal in the 28th minute of the match at Polsat Plus Arena, giving the White and Greens their first home victory of the 2023/24 season.

Lechia Gdańsk is currently 5th in the Fortuna 1 Liga and will face 12-ranked Resovia Rzeszów next Sunday at 6:00 CET.

Arka Gdynia fans also had reason to celebrate over the weekend after defeating Stal Rzeszów 3:2 in a hard-fought match Sunday night in Rzeszów.

Despite taking the lead early on with a goal by Hubert Adamczyk at the 9-minute mark, Stal set the tone of the match by scoring an equalizer some twenty minutes later. The Yellow and Blue took the lead shortly afterward with a goal in the 39th minute by Karol Czubak, which Stal player Bartłomiej Poczobut again matched six minutes later.

Arka took the lead again in additional time in the first half with a goal by Olaf Kobacki, assisted again by Hubert Adamczyk. Stal took the initiative in the second half, but Arka defenders and goalkeeper Paweł Lenarcik were able to ward off the opposing team’s frequent attacks and give Arka the ultimate victory.

With their first victory this season, Arka escaped from the relegation zone and are currently in 9th place in the I Liga table with five points. They are set to face current leaders GKS Tychy next Sunday, August 20, at 12:40 CEST.
