The Polish government has said that it wants to boost domestic steel production to the point where it is self-sufficient in the sector. Speaking at the European Steel Congress in the southern Polish city of Katowice the minister for state assets emphasized the significance of the steel industry to Poland’s economic growth. He stated that, despite a roughly 40-percent drop in domestic steel production over the past three decades, with an annual output of around 8.5 million tons, Poland still ranks among the larger steel producers in Europe.

However, Poland’s production only meets about half of its national demand, with the rest coming from imports. Poland is among the top 25 steel producers globally, and the EU as a whole is in third place, with an annual output roughly the same as India’s. China is by far the world’s top producer.

A study has found that Poland is no longer the first-choice destination for Ukrainian refugees. Poland is witnessing an exodus of Ukrainian refugees from its workforce as they travel to Germany for higher wages and government benefits, according to a new report by EWL employment agency.

The refugees are not economic migrants, but they are increasingly taking on work as Russia’s war in Ukraine drags on. Where they choose to live will impact European labour markets, as many EU countries, including Poland, are desperate for workers while they face demographic declines due to low birthrates, and Poland is no exception.

Polish football officials are set to announce the name of the national squad’s new football coach today, after days of speculation. The Polish Football Association said last week it was interviewing several candidates for the position of manager of the national team to replace Portugal’s Fernando Santos.

The announcement came after the national soccer governing body last week decided to part ways with Santos less than nine months after he was hired following the team’s disappointing performance in Euro 2024 qualifying. After five rounds of fixtures, Poland are fourth in their qualifying Group E, with six points, ahead of only the Faroe Islands.

After less than a week of open testing of the Three Cities new cycle hire scheme some problems are already being reported. Free testing of bikes has seen some people hiding the bikes on their terraces or deliberately destroying them.

The cycle hire scheme operator is considering changing the conditions of the open testing to deter such behaviour. Currently around 12,000 people have downloaded the cycle hire application. Other problems that have been discovered during the testing phase is the low number of bicycles available for testing, there are only 4,000 bikes available spread over 16 communes, and problems replacing the batteries in the electric bikes.
