A new gas pipe being constructed between Norway and Poland has made landfall in Denmark this week. The Baltic Pipe will connect Poland with Norwegian gas fields via Denmark and is part of an effort by the Polish government to diversify its gas supplies and reduce its energy dependence on Russia.
The Baltic Pipe is due to be launched in October next year to operate at an initial capacity of 2 to 3 billion cubic meters per year, and at full capacity from the end of 2022. It is ultimately expected to have the capacity to carry 10 billion cubic metres of natural gas from Norway to Poland via Denmark annually. The majority of Poland’s annual gas consumption is imported from Russia’s gas giant Gazprom under a contract expiring in December 2022.

Four people have been killed and 18 injured during the stormy weather which battered Poland over the last two days.
Firefighters said they were called out more than 10,350 times to deal with the aftermath of gales in various regions across the country. The strong winds snapped trees, damaged roofs and disrupted power supplies. More than 120,000 customers were left without electricity at one point, the Government Centre for Security reported.

A work of art by renowned Polish sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz has fetched a record PLN 13.2 million at auction.
The collection of 50 headless figures which was created in 1989 is made from sack cloth fibres and resin. Before the auction, experts said Crowd III was worth anywhere between PLN 12 million and PLN 18 million. Abakanowicz, who died in 2017 at the age of 86, was famous worldwide for her works including spatial compositions called “abakans.”

And finally, a 180 year old palm tree that was housed in Gdańsk Oliwa Park greenhouse will be removed after extensive efforts to save it appear to have failed.
Experts have confirmed that the tree has died and the Oliwa District Board has announced that it will submit a notification to the prosecutor’s office regarding the circumstances leading to its demise. The tree which was protected due to its significant historical and amenity value may have died due to negligence. A long delayed project to build a new palm house to accommodate the tree is still ongoing after a few years and has been beset by delays. The dead plant will now be replaced by three young trees.
