English Service: PM pays Christmas Eve visit to Polish soldiers at Belarus border

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Friday visited Polish soldiers stationed at the border with Belarus, and told them the country was „proud of their service”. 

Addressing the troops, the PM said: “Today we are responsible for the whole European Union and its security. But above all, we are responsible for the safety of Polish territory, and so we can be proud, and we are proud, of your service, of your dedication, of your sacrifice”. “I would like to wish you a peaceful, quiet night,” the PM told the soldiers ahead of the Christmas Eve evening.

Polish President Andrzej Duda and First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda on Friday issued a Christmas video message to the nation, wishing the public festive joy, health and inner peace. In the video, which was posted on the presidential website and social media, the head of state said: “Christmas is the most eagerly awaited time of the year – a time when we want to be close to our loved ones. A time when the fondest memories are rekindled”. The president also referred to the time-honoured Polish tradition of leaving one place setting empty for unexpected visitors at Christmas Eve. The president and First Lady concluded by saying, “May the Child of God bless our Homeland and support its strength with its own. Have a cheerful, merry Christmas. All the best!”

The head of Poland’s ruling conservative party has said that he plans to leave the government by the end of March in order to focus more on his party duties. In an interview with the Gazeta Polska Codziennie newspaper he also stated that he believes that governing coalition had a good chance of remaining in power at the next election. Kaczyński is not prime minister despite leading the biggest party in Poland’s ruling conservative coalition. He entered the government in October last year, becoming deputy prime minister responsible for national security and defence.

And finally, households around Pomerania have today woken up to a white Christmas after round of snow showers came to the region yesterday evening. Across Poland snow fell in patches during the day and evening leaving most of the country swathed in white on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The snow caused unexpected problems for drivers on the Tricity bypass as one lane became blocked due to trucks sliding in the icy conditions leaving a traffic jam a couple of kilometres long.
